Deductible - A deductible is like a threshold amount of money you need to pay out of your own pocket before your insurance starts to help cover the costs. Sort of like an entry fee.
For example: if your deductible is $500, you have to pay $500 for your medical expenses before your insurance kicks in to help pay the rest. Once you’ve paid that $500, your insurance will start sharing the cost of your treatments or services.
Out of pocket - Out-of-pocket expenses are the costs you have to pay yourself when you use your insurance. These include things like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
Coinsurance - Coinsurance is like sharing the cost of your medical bills with your insurance company. After you've paid your deductible (the amount you pay first), coinsurance is the percentage of the bill that you and your insurance company each pay.
For example:if your coinsurance is 20%, it means you pay 20% of the cost of a medical service, and your insurance pays the remaining 80%. So, if you have a $100 medical bill, you would pay $20, and your insurance would pay $80.
Copay - A copay (or copayment) is a fixed amount of money you pay each time you receive a specific type of medical service. It’s like a small fee you pay upfront when you attend your appointment.
For example: if your copay for a doctor's visit is $25, you pay $25 at the time of the visit, and your insurance typically covers the rest of the cost.
